I have used After Effects 7.0 for a while, but I have been having an issue with aspect ratio. When I import my 16x9 footage (originally shot in HDV using the Sony HDR-HC1, then downconverted to DV upon capture to the computer, though still 16x9), and I select %26quot;DV Widescreen%26quot; for my composition type and pixel aspect ratio as %26quot;1.2%26quot;, when I go to have After Effects make the movie, using the MPEG-2 format, it won't export it in 16x9, it wants to use 720x480. So, if I change my pixel aspect ratio to square pixels and lock it to 16x9, then if I try to use MPEG-2 it won't work. I don't know what I'm missing; I realize that with 720x480 comp and 1.2 pixel aspect ratio, then 720*1.2= 864, which is 16x9, but none the less, the output is squished to 4x3. After Effects will do 16x9 with AVI, but that is far too large for DVD or web use. Any suggestions for 16x9 with MPEG-2? Hi, I am using Adobe Premiere to edit a clip I have. It's 4:3 but I want to convert it to 16:9. Whenever I stretch the image in Premiere it remain as 4:3 and just gets bigger. Also when I use something like quicktime to change the video size it stays as a box shape and just has more black on the sides.



The image was shot at 16:9 but for some reason won't go back to that size.



Is there anyway I can stretch the image to that size and not just have black bars across when I change the video size. This is really annoying and be great if someone knew how.

I don't know exactly why you would want to change the aspect ratio unless you use your computer to view movies, in that case you should go to Control Panel/Display Settings/Settings and change the screen resolution to something in a widescreen (or if you're doing the opposite) normal screen settings, but this is at a limitation to your graphics card.



If, by any chance, you may be using a CRT monitor (and if so i recommend highly that you buy an LCD) the settings are usually on the monitor itself, screen width/height changes. The only real way is by cropping to a ratio. Yes, you will lose a little bit of your image from one side in the process, but the rest of it will still look perfect.



To do that, you need an image editing program.



The very best is Adobe Photoshop CS4, but it is very expensive.



A more sensible choice might be Photoshop Elements (current version is 8), which is Photoshop's smaller cousin - can't do all the same things, but it is much cheaper and perfectly adequate for most people.



Another editing program you can get is the Gimp (free and legal). It isn't pretty, has a big learning curve, but is a great program. http://www.gimp.org/

So in order for you to get the aspect ratio 3:2 you need to put the size to something like 300x200. (or any number that is even to this, so if you wanted it a little bigger then you can put 600x400. It will still be in the ratio 3:2).
